Recommendations and preparations/execution for catch & release
The fishing equipment should be sized for the fish you are fishing for.
Be well prepared with pliers and a net. A rubberized knotless net is a good tool.
Use hooks free of barbs or pinch the barb on your fishing hook. Never place the fish directly on land but on a wet surface. It is advisable to use an unhooking mat or similar.
Minimize the time of the fight, take the fish quite hard. Minimize air exposure of the fish as much as possible. Use a net or your hand to catch the fish. Always wet your hands before handling the fish. When you have loosened the hook from the fish's mouth, hold it in your hand or in the net below the surface of the water. Let the fish take its time to recover. When the fish wants to swim on, release your grip or let it swim out of the net. The basic rule is to always handle the fish as gently as possible. It is always your own responsibility to handle your catch with the utmost respect.
